Toyota joins hand with BYD for a joint EV company
After the second world war, the Chinese and the Japanese are responsible for some of the most unique collaborations. This time these two giants decided to collaborate and create an empire in the EV sector, undermining the fossil fuel giants, Russia and America.
Toyota and BYD have joined hands to build a company producing electric vehicles for the future. Based in China, this company will start its operations from the next year.
Borrowing the R&D department from both parent companies, this venture will be based on 50:50 collaboration.
Even though a veteran in the EV sector, Toyota lagged behind in the EV sector but this is not the case with BYD. BYD has been churning out plug-in hybrids for a while now and with their expertise, in this segment, it will surely help Toyota leave a mark in the EV sector.
While this joint venture is labeled as an equal collaboration, vehicles manufactured under it will be sold with a Toyota badge on it. This step will be welcomed by the world, but the first units of this venture will be sold in China.
"We aim to combine BYD's strengths in development and competitiveness in the battery electric vehicle market with Toyota's quality and safety technology to provide the best BEV products for the market demand and consumer affection as early as we can,” said BYD senior vice president Lian Yu-bo.
"With the same goal to further promote the widespread use of electrified vehicles, we appreciate that BYD and Toyota can become "teammates", able to put aside our rivalry and collaborate,” added
Toyota executive vice president Shigeki Terashi.
With the advent of the global environmental crisis, these steps are welcomed by the younger generation but the question still remains the same, ‘Are EVs a safer option?’
