Next-Gen Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ set for Tokyo reveal

According to a recent report by a Japanese magazine, automakers Toyota and Subaru are getting ready to showcase the second-generation of their twin sports cars, namely the 86 and BRZ models. It states that the new coupes will officially launch in the first half of 2021 but before that, the preview will be seen at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show on October 24.

The time lag between concept and production versions of Toyota sports car seems long as, before the racing version launch of Supra at the Detroit motor show in 2018, it was teased by the FT-1 in 2014. And till January 2019 the automaker was not completely ready to bring the car on roads. 

The report also reveals that the 86/BRZ will adopt a new platform for the next Toyobaru, which may translate into a revised version of the present architecture, as both Subaru’s Global Platform and Toyota’s TNGA are not compatible with the requirements like needed rear-wheel-drive layout and size.

The drivetrain will be the same as earlier, a four-cylinder boxer unit from Subaru but the upcoming 86/BRZ will get larger 2.4-litre FA24 in place of 2.0-litre FA20. The same power plant can be observed in most Subaru models, including turbocharged versions of the Legacy and Ascent. The rumors state the power delivery measurement as 217 PS. And like before, six-speed manual and automatic transmissions will be available.

Toyota also mentioned that the new platform offers a better driving position than the current models. It is designed to keep the driver’s seat low and back towards the centre of the vehicle, lowering the centre of gravity.

In January, both the automakers asserted the fact that they are working on the second-generation 86/BRZ but did not uncover any further detail. So, let’s see how the new model will come and attract buyers.
