Check out the next-generation Kia Sorento

Kia is all set to gear up for the release of its upcoming, next-generation Sorento crossover. The forthcoming offering by the automaker is said to be an electrically-assisted mid-sized crossover, developed under the codename MQ4. The car will replace the current Sorento model, which has a market presence of over six years.

Although any proper details have not been revealed on the electrical specifications of the car, the next-generation vehicle is believed to be a partial mid-sized electric crossover. Gas and Diesel options would still be the options for Sorteno, with the MQ4 being first from the brand. It is also assumed that the car is said to borrow cues from the Imagine EV concept, put for display at the Geneva Motor Show.

The present generation of the Sorento comes equipped with a 2.4 litre DOHC I-4 engine, producing a maximum power of 185 hp and a peak torque of up to 241 Nm. The 16-valve engine comes mated with an electronically controlled 6-Speed automatic transmission and features front-wheel drive. The automaker’s mid-size SUV segment also features a three-row seating arrangement. Kia Sorento price starts at $48,990, and it is renowned for its offering of a plethora of features for the safety of the occupants.

Kia’s chief operating officer, Emilio Herrera, recently commented on the future availability of the all-electric vehicle soon. He mentioned that the next-generation Sorento would come with a hybrid, as well as a plug-in hybrid option. The COO said that making these powertrain options available is a response to stricter emission rules. Although no exact dates have been revealed on the launch of the car, the future Sorento is assumed to hit the roads by 2021.

However, recently Kia Australia has recalled over a total of 3315 units of its 2020 Sorento. The cars were recalled due to an error in Front Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) software, creating concerns over the autonomous emergency braking system.
