Mazda 3 Hatch: Variants Explained

Mazda’s new generation 3 hatchback sports a bold design, in contrast to the conventionally styled rivals in the segment. Making a style statement, the Mazda 3 line-up comprises of six variants including G20 Pure, G20 Evolve, G20 Touring, G25 Evolve, G25 GT and G25 Astina. Here is a look at the features and specs of each variant that can help you identify the right option if you are planning to buy this bold hatch of Mazda.

Starting with the base G20 Pure trim, the front features LED headlamps with auto on/off function, LED tail-lamps and halogen daytime running lights. Prominent tech such as cruise control, active driving display, 8.8-inch infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation, steering mounted controls, etc. are standard. There is a long list of safety features that come with the entry-level grade. A 360 view monitor, side-bags, curtain-bags, knee-bags and dual front airbags along with ABS are part of the pack. Also aboard are blind-spot monitoring, electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist, hill launch assist lane departure warning and a raft of other features. All these can be had at a competitive price of $28,629.

Aside from the standardized kit available with G20 Pure, the next variant in the line-up, G20 Evolve additionally gets larger tyres and alloys on the outside. The major difference is inside the cabin packed with a dual-zone air-conditioner, rear-view mirror with auto-dimming function, height adjuster for front seats, leather-covered steering with tilt & telescopic function. These additional goodies are available for an additional cost of $1,800 (approximately) over the G20 Pure grade.

The next grade, G20 Touring carries over most of the features from the Evolve trim save for a few bits such as auto-dim function for the power adjusting & folding wing mirrors, leather seat covers, power adjusting driver’s seat with lumbar adjustment and advanced keyless entry. Paddle shifters & cruise control with stop & go functions are available only with the automatic variant, which are missing in the Evolve AT. Akin to G20 Pure and Evolve, it also gets a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine tuned to make 114kW at 6,000 rpm against 200Nm torque. Drive is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual and an optional six-speed auto box. In comparison to the G20 Pure, this grade is priced around $2,900 higher.

Next up in the range is the G25 Evolve. The power adjusting wing mirrors miss out on auto-dimming and power adjusting functions. While the interior is bereft of leather seat covers, it equips cylinder deactivation. As for pricing, there is a marginal difference of $500 compared to G20 Touring trim.

Along with standard kit available on G25 Evolve, the G25 GT additionally gets heated front seats, leather seat covers, heated ORVMs with auto-folding and dimming functions, heated steering wheel and BOSE audio system with 12 speakers. Rear parking sensors are available only with the automatic variant. All these extra features can be had by paying a premium of $3,610 over the G25 Evolve price.

Sitting at the top of the range is the G25 Astina featuring LED daytime running lights, LED auto on/off ALH and sunroof for a panoramic view. While there is no major difference on the inside, it packs a plethora of safety tech including a 360-degree camera, cruising & traffic support, driver monitoring, front cross-traffic and parking alert, ALH high beam control and parking sensors at both ends. As for pricing, it is pegged at $41,499 ($4200 more than G25 GT).

Mazda 3 hatchback has been awarded an impressive 5-star safety rating by globally acclaimed crash test entity, ANCAP. The G25 variants draw power from a more powerful 139kW, 2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine with 252Nm torque. This unit is linked to a six-speed manual unit with an optional six-speed automatic gearbox. Also, vision technology can be availed across the line-up at an additional premium of $1,500 save for the top-spec Astina variant that gets it as a standard fitment.
