The Japanese automaker, Suzuki, recently issued two separate recall notices for the 2017-19 Swift and Swift Sport, over concerns about an issue with the airbag controller. Apparently, there was an issue with the airbags, and the seatbelt pretensioner, with a possibility of accidentally deploying when the rear doors are slammed to shut. This occurred due to an incorrect software being installed in the airbag controller. The 2019 Swift is a fantastic amalgamation of latest design, revolutionary technology, exhilarating performance and advanced safety features. It is available in three variants priced between $17,690 and $22,990 (both prices are MSRP). The base model, GL Navigator, is powered by a 1.2-litre Dualjet engine which consumes 4.8 litres of fuel per 100kms. It comes fitted with a multimedia satellite navigation system with reversing camera, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, USB connectivity with steering wheel audio controls, cruise control, D-shaped steering wheel, 16-inches alloy wheels, privacy glass, daytime running lights and front fog lights. The Suzuki Swift is Japanese’s car giant’s stellar model, sold in several markets worldwide. Setting the cash registers ringing for Suzuki since its debut, Swift has evolved radically, from the time it was first introduced in 2005. With over five million units (approximately) of Swift sold globally, it sure qualifies as one of the most revered models from Suzuki. Currently, in its third generation, the Suzuki Swift is available in three variants-GL Navigator, GL Navigator with safety pack and GLX Turbo with a choice of a Dualjet and Boosterjet petrol engines in manual and automatic versions. Australia’s popular city car is an affordable bet, which gives it a cups over rivals with prices starting from $ 17,690 for the base, $19,690 for the GL navigator with safety pack and $ 22,990 for the GLX Turbo (all OTR prices).
Aesthetically, the current Suzuki Swift is a far cry from the previous generation model as it receives copious styling changes inside out. Talking of proportions, it measures 3,840 mm in length, 1,735 mm in width and 1,495 mm in height. The five-seater interior is built across a 2,450 mm long wheelbase, which hints at a decent cabin in terms of space. This iteration of Suzuki Swift has a sharp face highlighted by the large pentagonal black grille with Suzuki’s logo placed above the nameplate. Headlamps are slightly redesigned, that bring agility to the face; it also gets fog lamps lower down, that come enclosed with circular black housings. Multi-spoke alloy wheels, sculpted lines, dual-tone wing mirrors and side-mounted rear door handles are some striking elements on the sides. Changes to the rear are primarily confined to the redesigned square-shape wrap-around tail-lamps. In a bid to reduce drivetrain vibrations, Suzuki has used stiffer underpinnings, while sound-deadening materials ensure a quieter cabin, enhancing the ride quality.
The five-seater cabin is layered with a host of connectivity and other bits such as a multimedia satellite navigation system with reversing camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, iPod connectivity, USB connectivity, steering mounted audio controls and speakers. Sitting at the top of the Suzuki Swift range, the GLX Turbo gets some additional tech such as digital camera control, keyless entry and start system, etc.
Under the hood, it gets two petrol engines, a 1.2-litre four-cylinder unit good for a maximum power of 66kW at 6,000 rpm, around 4kW more than the previous model. As for torque, it puts out 120 Nm at 4,400 rpm. The 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, turbocharged Boosterjet engine is also available which belts out 82kW at 5,500 rpm along with 160 Nm of torque between 1500 to 4000 rpm. Choice of transmissions on the Suzuki Swift range includes a conventional five-speed manual unit and a six-speed CVT automatic gearbox. As for the safety kit, features such as immobilizer, front airbags, side airbags, curtain airbags, anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist system, ISOFIX tether anchorages, hill hold control automatic and vehicle stability control are standard across line-up. It also equips 3-point ELR with pre-tensioners, load limiters at front and rear.
