Next-gen BMW 7 Series will have a fully-electric version

Amongst all of the panic that has been created by the coronavirus pandemic, there is something for the automobile enthusiasts to rejoice. BMW, the giant German luxury automaker, has confirmed that the upcoming generation of the 7 Series will have an all-electric variant.

This news came from Oliver Zipse, the board chairman at BMW while he was speaking at the annual press conference. He mentioned that the upcoming BMW 7 Series will be available in four different powertrain options - petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric. All of these models will be built on the same architecture.

The BMW 7 Series might be using the same underpinning on all the different powertrains but the all-electric model will be the most powerful among all. The EV variant will have a driving range of up to 700 kilometres in one go and the motor will be capable of churning out a maximum power of 660 PS. The energy will be supplied from a 120 kWh battery.

We aren’t sure whether the all-electric form of the BMW 7 Series will just be the most powerful variant or the fastest too. To put things in perspective, the current top-performer in the 7 Series lineup does the 0-100 kmph sprint in less than 4 seconds and can hit a top speed of 250 kmph. So it remains to be seen whether the EV can possibly match these figures or not.

The naming of this fully electric BMW 7 Series has not been confirmed yet, though we can expect it to be named as the i7. This, along with the plug-in hybrid, will be a part of BMW’s plan of bringing 25 electrified cars by 2023.
