Mitsubishi is about to expand its hybrid range to complement electrified Outlander
Mitsubishi is all set to expand its plug-in hybrid range after the introduction of the Outlander PHEV. The smaller PHEV SUV will hit the markets by the second half of 2020 alongside a redesigned Outlander, as per reports by the Automotive News Europe.
The automaker’s upcoming offering is said to feature a platform, shared with alliance partners Renault and Nissan. Moreover, the diesel version of the ASX and the Eclipse Cross might be axed down in 2020 due to low sales.
Recently, Mitsubishi introduced the Outlander with some significant upgrades and an all-new engine. The traditional 2.0-litre petrol engine has been swapped by a new 2.4-litre petrol unit with an electric powertrain to accompany the vehicle. The crossover comes with 4X4 off-road ability, using both electric and gas power.
The engine produces a maximum power of 236 hp while generating a peak torque of around 300 Nm, the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 10.5 seconds at a top speed of 106 mph. The battery stack on the car now comes with a 10 percent more charge capacity at 13.9 kWh. There are two electric motors, one for each axle, and the rear motor gets a power boost to 95 hp.
The Outlander PHEV features three separate drivetrains out of which the vehicle automatically selects the best one, depending on driving conditions. In the EV Drive Mode offered by the car, the vehicle runs over energy being supplied exclusively by the battery pack. Moreover, the Outlander PHEV can run in 100 percent EV mode in four-wheel-drive.
Lastly, the upcoming PHEV by Mitsubishi marks the company’s aim towards reducing its total CO2 emissions.
