Mitsubishi revealed the 2020 ASX at the Geneva Motor Show in February 2019. It is yet another facelift of the most popular compact SUV in Australia. The fresh-faced Mitsubishi ASX features new styling both at the front and the rear. The integrated indicators and fog lights are surrounded by more colour-coded bodywork and more striking vertical lines. The front-end features new LED lights and also the ‘skid plate styling’ under the front bumper, which adds a little more ruggedness to the design. The interior also gets a major upgrade and now features a larger touch-screen. The infotainment system screen is now 8.0-inches and it continues with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. It can now play videos from a USB stick. Mitsubishi is expected to offer Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as standard on all the 2020 models. There’s no official announcement of the prices for the 2020 models; presently, the ASX retails between $23,990 and $32,990. The 2020 ASX is expected to reach Australia by October 2019.

The lower-priced segment of the small SUV category is pretty crowded. You have got the ever-popular Mazda CX-3, the well priced Ford EcoSport and then this, Mitsubishi ASX, which actually outsells all the rest. The ASX still looks pretty decent, which is great considering it hasn’t had a complete facelift in years. In Australia, Mitsubishi serves this car to its customers in six trim levels, ES (manual), ES (automatic), Black Edition, ES ADAS, LS and EXCEED.
The exterior still holds up on the road. The fashionable front grille and shimmering chrome highlights enhance the front look of the car. Coming to the side profile, the 18 inches alloy wheels and the roof rails look very attractive. The rear profile is beautified by the rear spoiler and rear bumper. Though the ASX turns heads while you take it out for a spin. Overall the design is not going to win any beauty pageants but that’s not why you are looking at a Mitsubishi.
Getting inside the car, it is harder to get excited about. There is a fair bit of hard plastic along with the dash and the doors. The seats are leather but it’s not the greatest leather seen on Mitsubishi. Apart from that, you get a magnificent panoramic glass roof with electric retractable sunshade and LED mood lighting. The interior surrounds you with sound, tech and comfort in many ways. ASX features a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio, phone and cruise control. The infotainment system features a 7 inches touchscreen display and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. There is a good amount of legroom and headroom for the rear passengers but lacks rear AC vents. Loading and unloading stuff in the boot is made easier with just a touch of the tailgate button. The tailgate is wide enough to provide hassle-free entry for bulky items.
Powering this beast is a zippy and efficient 2.0 L 4 cylinder MIVEC engine. It produces 134 hp of maximum power and 197 Nm of peak torque. The power is transmitted through a manual or CVT automatic transmission. The CVT engine is very responsive and you will never feel any sort of lag in the power delivery. The ASX now only comes with the two-wheel- drive, there is no all-wheel-drive option anymore.
Mitsubishi has come up with a special edition known as “ Black Edition ”. It has another level of city styling in a compact SUV form. It features a unique 18 inches black alloy wheels, black mirrors, front fog lamps, privacy glass and chrome exhaust. The interior comes with a sleek leather wrap steering wheel and shift knob with striking red stitching. The centre console panel flaunts a carbon fibre look.
The safety is an absolute standout because the ASX comes with MITEC (Mitsubishi Motors Intuitive Technology). It includes advanced safety equipment such as blind spot warning, lane change assist, automatic high beam, forward collision mitigation, active stability control, traction control, hill start assists and rear cross traffic alert.
