Mitsubishi and Nissan to work together on the new Triton, Navara

Electrification of cars has become one of the hot topics in the auto industry right now. Now, the two world-renowned automakers, Mitsubishi and Nissan, are teaming up for their upcoming models Triton and Navara. According to the global CEO of Mitsubishi, Mr Ashwani Gupta, the option to switch to a conventional petrol engine after a small amount of electric power range makes the PHEV models not only more efficient but also much more environment-friendly.   

While addressing the media, the global CEO of Mitsubishi, Mr Gupta said, “The PHEV does not have the challenge of infrastructure. That’s why PHEV, we believe, is the right technology for performance but also the environment.” He said that the two manufacturers have already started having the best practices in exchange and have done quite a bit when it comes to benchmarking of each other. He went on to add that the companies are working together but the problem is that they have only one production facility available in Thailand. 

Mr. Gupta also highlighted over the point that the two cars will no doubt look different but might use several similar components, such as the technology of engine depending on the emission that the various countries require from the cars. Some of the critical elements of the new Mitsubishi Triton such as the load-carrying capability, off-road usage, and towing present are unique challenges for the automaker. Thus the company has been working on a conventional PHEV system where the petrol motor is complemented by a small battery which is better than going with a petrol engine alone. 

Mr. Gupta also said that they have been working on more than one component to make sure that the electrification is done in the right way. At the end of the discussion, he added, “I’m pretty sure one day Australia will also pick up on electrification and I think we want to be ready for any opportunity which we have. That’s the reason we launched Outlander PHEV, just to create awareness in the market. We didn’t launch it as a business strategy, we launched it as an awareness strategy.”
