Globally, Hyundai has revealed a hybrid version of the Sonata having a solar roof panel. It is currently under review for the Australian market. On the other hand, the carmaker has announced Sonata N-Line in the New York Motor Show and is confirmed to arrive in the local market after 2021. It is based on the 2020 Hyundai Sonata, which was unveiled in this year’s March. Currently, the car is available in two different versions - Active and Premium. The former is equipped with a 2.4-litre GDi engine, which can provide a maximum of 185 hp power along with 241 Nm of torque. It is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, there is a 2.0-litre GDi unit that is capable of churning out a maximum power of 241 hp and a peak torque of 353 Nm. An eight-speed torque converter is coupled with the engine.

The Hyundai Sonata is a mid-size sedan, available in Active and Premium variants with a choice of two engines and two automatic gearboxes. The Hyundai Sonata price in Australia falls in the range of $34,962 to $50, 570 (MLRP). Readying for a generation change, the existing model came out during late 2017, sporting copious aesthetic and mechanical changes along with a bunch of new features. The Hyundai Sonata sedan is available in six exterior colour options including Valentine Red, Grand Blue, Midnight Black, ion Silver, White Cream and Pantera Grey. Under the hood, it gets 2.4-litre and 2.0-litre engines from Hyundai’s Theta II engine family.
The mid-size sedan is quite voluptuous with length gauging at 4,855 mm, width at 1,865 mm and height at 1,475 mm. It has a minimum ground clearance of 135 mm, based on kerb weight. Positioned as an entry-level variant, Sonata Active misses out on the satin chrome trim on the door frame and beltline moulding, dark chrome on the front mesh grille and other bits ornate in dark chrome. Other fittings such as LED side repeater inside mirrors, LED daytime running lights, automatic dusk sensing headlamps with escort and welcome functions, LED positioning lights, LED puddle lights, safety reflectors at the rear, etc. are standard. While the base trim gets slightly smaller alloys, the Premium variant equips larger Michellin pilot sport 3 units.
Moving to the cabin, there is ample room for the occupants with 1,155 mm legroom in the front and 905 mm at the rear. Shoulder room for passengers seated at the front is 1,470 mm, while rear occupants also get generous shoulder space estimated at 1,435 mm. Storage space for keeping luggage is 462-litres with rear seat up that can be further expanded by 48-litre to 510-litre. To enhance the practicality of the cabin, Hyundai has provided a host of utility points such as front seatback pockets, retractable sunglasses compartment, map pockets at both ends, a glovebox compartment, coat hooks, integrated cup holders on the armrest and 60:40 split rear seat that makes additional space for storage. While both variants feature climate control with dual-zone, front seats with air ventilation and heating function are reserved for the top-spec Premium grade. Other advanced gadgets such as integrated memory system on driver’s seat and wing mirrors, rear door curtains (manual), wireless charging pad, etc. are available exclusively with the range-topping variant. The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto supported infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite navigation, etc, is standard on the line-up.
Under the bonnet, the Hyundai Sonata gets a 2.4-litre GDi engine with 138kWat 6,000 rpm and 241 Nm torque. The other engine on offer is the 2.0-litre GDi unit that puts out 180 kW at 6000 rpm along with peak 353 Nm between 1,400 to 4,000 rpm. While the 2.4-litre unit comes with a 6-speed torque converter, the 2.0-litre engine is paired to an 8-speed unit. Prominent safety bits comprise multiple airbags, ISOFIX mounts, height adjusting head restraints, impact sensing auto door unlock and active lock/unlock operation among several others.
