VW Caddy sold out; no plans of making a comeback
VW is not that into pickups but they were knee-deep in trucks back in the 70s. Called the ‘Caddy’, it was VW’s baby step into the redneck arena. Since then, the beloved Caddy was developed into a camper or a van to be precise.
The Caddy Mk2 was in itself an ugly duckling but what worked like a charm was the Mk3, which grabbed Australia’s attention. Why the Mk3? Because it gave life to the 70s campervan era and people loved it.
The sad part here is that Australia received only 120 units of these Caddy Beach Camper and all those units were sold out recently. To top things up, Caddy Beach Camper was priced at an affordable price tag of $46,990.
The Beach Camper consisted of some top-shelf features which included a fold-out bed, walk-through tent, two folding camp chairs, Blockout curtains and a decent amount of space inside.
“I don’t think anyone could accuse the Beach of being anything other than a niche model,” a spokesperson said.
“We brought in a few examples of it in the last model year, but it’s had its run.”
Replacing this Caddy would be the much-awaited T6.1 California Camper. Trying to catch up with the latest trends, VW has been experimenting with some ‘out of the box’ ideas. With Amarok already making a dent in the South African market, the upcoming camper will surely leave an impression upon the Australian audience.
“We still see California as being a strong opportunity, which is why we’re working hard on introducing it as part of the T6.1 rollout,” the Volkswagen Australia spokesperson said.
