Volkswagen Caddy Van Review 2024
Sippi Vig says
Caddy Van is an alternative to the Transporter Van. It’s smaller in size but can do the same tasks with better efficiency. Precisely for the same reason, it has been rated as the best vehicle in the compact van segment for over 10 years. Caddy Van is available in three grades SWB Van, Maxi Van, and Maxi Crewvan. These grades are available with two engine options. You can get the newly introduced 1.4L TSI available with the 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG transmission. Or, you can pick a 2.0L TDI engine paired with 6-speed DSG. These engines are backed by Bluemotion technology which cuts the fuel supply when the vehicle is standing idle. Instead, it uses available battery power to keep it running. This results in better fuel efficiency. The diesel engine can deliver ratings of 5.3 litres per 100km and the petrol engine can give better ratings of 6.0 litres per 100km. In terms of daily use, these numbers can prove to be pocket-friendly. Caddy Van can carry the payload of up to 840 kg. It comes standard with driving assistance features which include multi-collision brake, driver fatigue detection, forward collision warning with emergency brake assist.

Volkswagen Caddy Van Interior & Features
Caddy Van comes with practical interiors. The cockpit is designed smartly to keep a balance between the two worlds. The dashboard is crafted intuitively and features a big space in the top middle. While in the front of it, you’ll get a standard 5-inch touchscreen display, air vents, and climate control buttons. On the infotainment front, Caddy Van is decked with AM/FM radio, CD player, AUX support, USB input, and two speakers. In terms of comfort and convenience, the driver’s seat features height and lumbar adjustment. There’s also plenty of space like you’ll get overhead storage shelf as well as under-seat storage compartments. Interior lights include LED reading lights and roof lights in the cargo area. The cargo section offers a great space of 3.2m³ for the base grade, 4.2m³ for mid-grade, and 1.6m³ for the top trim. You can also remove the second-row seats in the Maxi Crewvan to extend the cargo space to 4.1m³.
Caddy Van Exterior
Caddy Van carries the traditional van attire. The front fascia features Volkswagen emblem placed on top of the grille. On the sides, standard halogen headlights and daytime running headlights extend the appearance. You can also go for optional Xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights. The rear fascia carries forward the same design and elements in 2020. SWB Van has a standard left sliding door and optional sliding door on the right side, while the higher grades come with sliding doors on both sides. The 15-inch steel wheels are available with the diesel powertrain on Van and Maxi Van. Whereas with petrol powertrain, you’ll get standard 16-inch steel wheels with each grade of Caddy Van. Alloy wheels are optional with the base and mid-grade but are not available with the top trim.
Volkswagen Caddy Van Ride & Handling
Despite being available in the different sizes, all the grades of Caddy Van get the standard suspension. In the front axle, MacPherson strut is linked with a double-wishbone and anti-roll bar. And, in the rear axle, leaf spring suspension is matched with load-dependent damper and anti-roll bar. The rear suspension gets jittery when there’s no cargo loaded. However, it works perfectly when you load Caddy with sufficient cargo. Volkswagen has decked Caddy Van with electronic mechanical power-assisted steering. With this, Caddy drives more like a hatchback and offers decent handling and control over the wheels.
Caddy Van Engine & Fuel Consumption
Caddy van is offered with two different engines. The 1.4-litre TSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard with SWB Van and Maxi Van. This engine can deliver optimum power of 92 kW at 4,800 rpm and torque of 220 Nm at 1500–3500 rpm. The base trim is paired with the 6-speed manual gearbox while the second one is paired with 7-speed DSG and also features sports mode and Tiptronic function. The top trim, Caddy Maxi Crewvan is powered by 2.0 litre TDI engine, it’s mated with the 6-speed DSG gearbox and also comes with sports mode and Tiptronic function. This engine can produce a maximum power of 75 kW at 2,900–4,000 rpm and torque of 250 Nm at 1,300–2,800 rpm. The gearshifts are lightning quick and smooth, adding another layer of tranquillity to what is already a comfortable and quiet van to drive. Both engines get BlueMotion Technology. It stops the fuel supply to the engine when the van is standing still. With this technology, the combined fuel efficiency of Caddy van stands at 6.2 litres per 100km for the base grade, 6.0 litres per 100km for mid, and 5.3 litres per 100km for the top grade.
Volkswagen Caddy Van Braking & Safety
Caddy Van is loaded with a pack of standard brake assistance features. The antilock braking system hinders the wheels from choking while applying brakes. Likewise, you’ll get the electronic brakeforce distribution ensures that the wheel with most traction gets the maximum braking pressure. Also, there’s standard ESP function, it regulates the engine and braking power as per the driving condition. To further make sure that Caddy remains safe, Volkswagen has installed brake assist. It monitors the driving and applies the brake to prevent the front collision. The base grade is decked with 288 mm ventilated disc brakes in the front and 272 mm disc brakes in the rear. While the mid and top grades have the same configuration of 312 mm ventilated brakes in the front and 272 mm ventilated disc brakes in the rear. On the safety front, Caddy Van gets all the essential features. It involves driver, front passenger, and side airbags, driver fatigue detection, rear park distance control with sound, and forward collision warning with emergency braking as standard. Whereas the optional driving assistance package includes front fog lights with static cornering function, automatic headlights, auto-dimming inside rearview mirror, adaptive cruise control, and active lane keep assist.
Caddy Van Verdict
Caddy Van gets the adaptive cruise control and park assist features, both of these features are not available in any of its rivals. However, on the downside, the acceleration feels unenergetic, but the ride quality is refined, and the cabin remains silent even while riding on bumpy roads.
