Toyota is gearing up for its high-performance Supra GRMN
Toyota is preparing to roll out a GRMN- badged Supra, as per a report from the Japanese automotive blog BestCars. The GRMN (Gazoo Racing Meisters of Nurburgring) Supra could be powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine, generating maximum power of 395 hp.
While the report indicates that the model would likely make a debut at some point in 2020, it also suggests that a wide distribution of carbon fibre parts will reduce the total curb weight of the vehicle significantly.
Additionally, the forthcoming car would get more extra body reinforcements, making the model stiffer than the existing one alongside a new suspension. These new changes in suspension and a decreased bodyweight point towards a more aggressive look for the GRMN.
Considering a stiffer model design, the vehicle is also assumed to carry a more massive carbon wing, alongside a revised front fascia, and a vented bonnet.
However, the recent report might also be just a rumour, previous year Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada mentioned that the Supra range would be updated with a hard-core variant "pretty much every year."
The GRMN Supra is rumoured to eliminate the manual gearbox among its upgrades. Tada also indicated that this is a matter of investment priorities as Toyota can also create a more powerful coupe or come up with a three-pedal setup, whichever seems to be the best.
When asked about the arrival in the Australian market, a spokesperson from Toyota commented, "If a vehicle of that nature were to become available to Australia, we would definitely be keen on it here." He also added. "We've seen the strong appetite Australians have for high-performance vehicles, and how fast the available Supras were snatched up, and we have no doubt there'd be a strong desire for this vehicle, too."
Lastly, there are no official comments on either the arrival or on the engine specifications of the car; the leaks from BestCars can't be considered as a cementing proof and might be a rumour.
