Third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan to arrive around 2022

One of the best SUVs of 2018, the Volkswagen Tiguan, is reported to have its new iteration to arrive around 2022. The carmaker has a plan to take a radical approach for next-gen Tiguan as it is also introducing a plethora of full-electric ID SUVs soon.

During 2018, the Volkswagen Tiguan has given the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer a good profit. It was reported that the brand sold over 850,000 units of the car last year, making it one of the top-selling nameplates in 2018.

As for the upcoming generation, it looks like the Volkswagen Tiguan will ditch its boxy shape to adorn a more dynamic coupe style. It is expected to wear a radical styling overhaul with more fastback-style rear and sloping roofline. However, the boot space is likely to remain unchanged to rest at 470 litres. There is an option to get an Allspace model, which is roomier and extends the overall length of Tiguan to 250 mm.

Under the skin, there is the brand’s trademark MQB platform but will receive more electrical aid with 12V or 48V mild-hybrid system. Moreover, the car is likely to be available in two different plug-in hybrid variants along with 170 hp or 250 hp power output options.

The manufacturer has a plan to add a high-performance Tiguan R to its portfolio. It may come with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI engine, which is capable of delivering a maximum power of 350 hp. The power is sent to the wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox and the buyer will also have an option to upgrade it to fast-shifting DSG transmission. It will get the 4Motion all-wheel-drive as the standard feature.

Apart from the high-tech powertrains, the car also needs to have the certificate from the upcoming Euro 7 emissions standards. The carmaker has claimed that the third-generation Tiguan will also come with Level 4 autonomous capabilities.
