Nissan develops a new age sound insulation meta-material

Nissan has recently introduced the world with a new form of technology to reduce sound insulation at the Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas. The automaker has successfully developed a translucent, almost holographic meta-material for improving the sound insulation in a vehicle.

Known as acoustic meta-material, this lattice structure is covered by a plastic film, this new invention will be reducing the rolling noise coming from the engine. The product is a result of a combination of lattice structure and a plastic film that aims to control the air vibrations, limiting the transmission of a broader frequency band noise ranging between 500 to 1200 hertz.

Traditionally, the materials used in the insulation of a given vehicle are heavy rubber board, which weighs around one-fourth more when compared to Nissan’s new meta-material. While providing the users with the same degree of sound isolation, the automaker claims that its new findings simple structure enables them to keep it cost-competitive.

Moreover, its new-age innovation makes vehicles lighter by helping them create a lesser amount of noise pollution and to limit the environmental impact of driving by improving energy efficiency. The acoustic material also enhances the peace inside the cabin by providing a quiet vehicle that makes driving more comfortable.

The Japanese automaker started their research towards providing the world with a meta-material technology, around 2008. Nissan advanced material engineer Susumu Miura claimed that the company develops to expand its scope of meta-material technology in the near future and use them in their vehicles.

Previously, meta-material was used in high-sensitivity antennas for doing electromagnetic wave research. Nissan and its team of scientific research have worked over a period of 12 years to extend the applicability of meta-material technology. They include sound waves, leading to the successful invention of acoustic meta-material.
