Mercedes-Benz to debut three plug-in hybrid models in March 2020

One of the many automakers who have managed to remap their premiere and launch stories post the cancellation of the Geneva Motor Show is Mercedes-Benz. The German luxury carmaker looks to be set to introduce three new hybrid models in March, despite the absence of a great motor show platform.

Mercedes-Benz has posted a video on its Facebook page that confirms the introduction of CLA sedan, CLA Shooting Brake and the GLA SUV. These would be in the plug-in hybrid powertrain, as mentioned in the video.

We don’t know much about these cars until they are introduced officially. However, what we do know is the fact that these three cars could use similar plug-in hybrid powertrains to allow the automaker to bring introduce them simultaneously. The use of the plug-in hybrid mechanism in entry-level models would ensure that efficiency runs the roost without compromising on the price.

These three models will also prove the versatility of the CLA and GLA platform. The range earlier included the standard models, followed by the sporty AMG powertrain. And then, the introduction of hybrids will fill the gap completely. The AMG was the outright performance model, while the plug-in hybrids will bring efficiency more than speed.

The introduction of more hybrid models will help Mercedes-Benz augment the EQ Electric SUV (EV concept). Once the concept transforms into production versions, it would help the brand have a better chance on the customers who would already vouch for electrified mobility.

Mercedes Australia already sells the CLA and GLA here. Hence, if at all the plug-in models are brought here, it would be interesting to see how the buyers would prefer their Merc to be - combustion sedans (coupes) and SUVs or their electric siblings.
