Land Rover plans to bring Defender-inspired models
With an aim to get maximum advantage of iconic Defender tag, the Land Rover prepares to bring a baby Defender and Defender Sports. These new models will complete the three-edged family of the popular model according to a recent report.
Out of the two Defender-inspired models, first, we have an entry-level model codenamed as L860. The exterior and interior styling of the vehicle features a rugged rounded look, which is highly influenced by the new Defender. The baby Land Rover is expected to arrive in 2021 with an initial price of £25,000 ($48,000).
Being an entry-level version, the price is reduced by adopting a D10 (or Omega-Arc) platform. It is an updated and cost-efficient version of the D8 platform on which first-gen Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport are based. The D10 platform houses a compact battery pack for electrification. The platform can support plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid drivetrains based on the upcoming 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder Ingenium petrol mill. The Indian made Tata Harrier also features the same platform.
Moving to the next Defender-inspired model i.e. Defender Sport, it is expected to join the family in 2024. As compared to the regular Defender, the model is bigger and more premium. It will be competing with Aston Martin DBX and Bentley Bentayga.
The range-topper model will ride on the MLA platform incorporating pure-electric powertrains, which we can see in the upcoming Jaguar XJ also. The platform will be in accordance with the 2025 EU C02 regulations to provide an eco-friendly choice to the buyers. Although it is the range-topping model, the off-roading capabilities would be equal to the ongoing Defender because of electric motors.
