Alfa Romeo crossover could be the first FCA model based on Peugeot platform

One of the first economical moves after the recently-signed merger between the Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot Citroen is making the headlines. According to a report by Automotive News Europe, Alfa Romeo's small crossover could be the first FCA model based on the compact Peugeot platform, which also forms the basis for the Peugeot 208.

The Alfa Romeo crossover will be a battery-only model slated to launch in late 2022. It is likely to get the front- and all-wheel drive systems options. As part of the merger, the groups said that the entire production would only be concentrated on two platforms, where PSA’s CMP architecture will be the smaller platform and the group’s EMP2 will be used for larger cars.

However, the larger Jeep models and Ram pickups will continue to use FCA underpinnings. A total of 2.6 million cars per year would be produced on a small platform, while 3 million per year on a compact/midsized platform.

For your reference, Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa uses CMP chassis, which was launched last year with the DS 3 Crossback and Peugeot 3008 uses the EMP2 platform, which debuted in 2017. The EMP2 platform is also used by the DS 7 Crossback, 5008 midsize SUV, Opel Grandland, Citroen C5 Aircross and the Peugeot 508 sedan.

Both the platforms are capable of accommodating diesel, petrol and electric powertrains. The cars featuring the CMP architecture will enter production in 2019. The next CMP-based model due is the Citroen C4 Cactus hatchback, to be launched next year.

No effect will be seen on the Fiat 500e model progress due to the transition to PSA’s architecture because it has already entered its advanced development stage. It’s built at the Mirafiori plant in Turin. Also, the existing range of large FCA’s SUVs and pickups will continue to build on their dedicated platforms.

The report also mentioned certain advantages of PSA’s architecture. Aside from their being multi-energy, meaning they are capable to support diesel, petrol, and electric powertrains, they are more modern than FCA’s platforms. Also, they allow the automaker to swiftly respond to customers’ changing demands without a hefty investment.
