2021 Chevrolet Corvette Hybrid - New details emerge

A new C8 variant is underway, reports in the media indicate. The new variant will be an amalgamation of old and new Corvette, picking the best from both versions. According to leaked specs, the hybrid power and all-wheel-drive won’t only be restricted to the tops-spec ZR1 powered by a new twin-turbocharged double-overhead-cam V8.

The reports further suggest this new variant will benefit from the mid-mounted LT2 pushrod V8 from the standard Corvette Stingray. This unit will work in symbioses with an electric drive unit, channelizing power to all four wheels. Chevrolet will roll out both coupe and convertible versions.

The power generated by the electric drive unit is said to put out peak power of 85kW and 150kW. Speaking of the regular Corvette, it makes 370kW and 637Nm torque, since the power peaks of the electric unit are differing, those cannot be added to the regular Corvette’s output.

Moving to the hybrid variant, it will be positioned below the ZR1 variant and derive power from a 671kW twin-turbo hybrid V8. The hybrid version will most likely use the electric power during low-speed driving, somewhat similar to the Honda NSX. It is expected to fill the gaps in power delivery.

In comparison, the Honda NSX, which derives power from a V6 unit, makes 373kW against 550Nm, while the two electric motors make 27kW and 73Nm each. An additional 35kW is generated by a direct-drive motor fitted for the assistance of rear wheels.

It is expected that Corvette could weigh heavier than the regular version after the addition of an electric set-up. However, reports opine Chevrolet will not use separate motors for each front, something seen in the Honda NSX. There will be a mechanical actuator-driven pawl clutch that will allow the disconnecting power supply to the front wheels when required.

There will be a rectangular case which Chevrolet calls the Rechargeable Energy Storage System (RESS) that will house all-electric components, including the 1.94kWh battery while the electric drive unit will be placed in front, which will enable better weight distribution. Aside from the above changes, also expect a custom strut brace and unique cradle for the hybrid variant.
