2020 McLaren 620R is a street-legal 570S GT4
Street-legal models of proper race cars have always fascinated the enthusiasts and the devotees. And, when it comes from the house of McLaren, the British automaker, the fun, and excitement reach new heights. With that said, coming straight out of the McLaren stable is the 2020 620R, a street-legal or shall we say road-going model of the track-focused 570S GT4 race car. McLaren has priced the 620R at £250,000 in the UK ( $ 480,000 AUD), and the production units will be limited to a small number, that is, 350 only. We do not expect to see a 2020 McLaren 620R roaring down under.
Anyway, the street-legal 570S GT4 race car in the form of the McLaren 620R gets a track-car-like cabin that ditches floor carpets, climate control, glovebox, and the infotainment display with a sound system. Then there are also the six-point harnesses, red 12 o’clock steering wheel marker, door pull straps and carbon-fibre trim, and super-light carbon-fibre bucket seats among others making their way to the McLaren 620R. Courtesy of the Monocell II carbon-fibre structure, the road-going 570S GT4 weighs just 1282 kg and also features the likes of the more solid anti-roll bars, aluminium wishbones and uprights, trustworthy stainless-steel top mounts, and more substantial springs.
Furthermore, elements like the front splitter, dual-vented front bonnet, race-inspired dive planes, and a revisited front bumper enhance the aerodynamics and provide the 620R with a 65kg of downforce. The insane rear wing that you see the photographs of the 2020 McLaren 620R is mounted 32 cm above the body and serves the car a rear downforce of 185 kg at 250 kmph. The 2020 McLaren 620R rides on a set of 19-inch front and 20-inch rear alloys clothed with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tyres, with track-only tyres also up for grabs.
Coming on to the mechanical bits, the 2020 McLaren 620R gets the same 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol-fed motor as the GT4, albeit in a different state of tune. Power figures read 620 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 620 Nm, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox sends the power to the rear wheels. The 2020 McLaren 620R can do a 0 to 100 kmph run 2.9 seconds and sprint from 0 to 200 in 8.1 seconds before topping out at 322 kmph. Braking duties are handled by carbon-ceramic brake discs and aluminium brake callipers. While the front discs measure 390mm and are clamped by a six-piston calliper, the rear rotors sport a diameter of 380mm and incorporate a four-piston calliper.
Optional equipment includes an MSO-designed roof scoop, titanium exhaust system, and a Bowers and Wilkins premium sound system.
