2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe revealed

Ahead of the official premiere, BMW unveiled the first 2 Series Gran Coupe. The four-door small luxury model will be making its way to the Australian showrooms early next year.

BMW 2 Series front

The 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will be based on the same front and AWD platform as the new BMW 1 Series hatchback and Mini. In the competitor's list, we can count Mercedes-Benz CLA and A-Class sedans. It implies that the new model features the coupe roofline and four frameless doors.

The BMW 2 Series variants include 218i, 220d, and the M235i xDrive. Let’s observe the oily bits of these, first, we have 218i, it is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine producing 140 PS of power and 220 Nm of torque. The firm claims the run of 0-100 kmph in 8.5 seconds. Drive is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Second, we have 220d, it is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine delivering 190 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. This variant is not offered in the BMW 1 Series hatch, so it is unlikely to be on the Australian list.

The BMW 2 Series M235i xDrive is powered by 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 306 PS of power and 450 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an adaptive M xDrive AWD system.

Though the engine options to be offered in Australia are still not confirmed, but the company mentioned only the M235i model in its press release.

Inside the cabin, the dashboard seems almost similar to the new 1 Series, which incorporates the BMW OS7.0 infotainment system, two 10.25 inch displays, and natural voice inputs. And if we compare the trunk capacity of the 2 Series with Mercedes-Benz CLA, it reads as 430 litres which means 30 litres less, though same as standard A-Class sedan. The dimensional difference with the 3 Series sedan measures as 200 mm less.
