2005-12 Lexus IS recalled, concern Takata airbag

Lexus recently issued a recall notice for the 2005-12 model-year IS due to concern regarding replacement airbags fitted in the Takata campaign (2017) that may not deploy correctly.

A list of 13,768 vehicles is provided by the automaker which may get affected by the aforementioned defect. The recalled IS variants of different model years are mentioned as

  • IS250 (GSE20) - MY05-12 (12,179 vehicles)
  • IS350 (GSE21) - MY10-12 (1281 vehicles)
  • IS F (GSE20) - MY08-12 (308 vehicles)

In 2017, the company issued a recall notice regarding the replacement of Takata airbag inflators and after that this the inflators were replaced in the affected vehicles.

Now, the company officials state that there is a possibility that the replacement desiccated Takata airbag inflators fitted to the affected vehicles were not produced properly and the front passenger airbag may not inflate fully during deployment.

Further, the officials said, "If the passenger airbag does not fully inflate, this may increase the risk of injury in the event of an accident.”

The owners of the affected cars will get a notification from Lexus Australia through email, requesting them to contact their nearest Lexus dealer and schedule an appointment to fix the issue free of cost.

For more information, consumers can call on 1800 023 009. Further, the original notice provided by the company can also be checked.

It is known that the Takata airbag recall is the largest recall ever happened in history, and Takata has sought the cover of bankruptcy protection. The recall on Takata’s defective airbag inflators is expected to force the recall of over 100 million vehicles by the end of 2019.

Besides Toyota, the other automakers included in Takata airbag recall are Honda, Acura. Fiat Chrysler and Ford. These automakers have issued massive callback notices for millions of cars with the defective airbags installed and spend hundreds of millions in settlements.
