Renault dropped Alaskan ute for Australia, may adopt Mitsubishi Triton platform

Renault Australia recently announced the axing of its Alaskan ute from the local portfolio. The move was led by the issue of high costing needed for tuning the suspension locally as it is themed for the European lifestyle.

On another front, Mitsubishi joined the Renault-Nissan alliance recently, which arises the chance of replacing the earlier ute plan with a reframing version of Mitsubishi Triton. During an interview, Anouk Poelmann, managing director of Renault Australia said, “the Alaskan is not suitable in its current form in Australia”. But just after this, she added, “not walking away from the ute market and would pursue other opportunities.”

Upon asking about the possibilities of Renault getting a ute based on recently launched Mitsubishi Triton, she replied that it is too early to comment on this. Though, she cited that the new ute would look like a Renault and have a unique body. The whole organisation is under new wings and engaged in product planning and product development through new and fresh eyes.

The firm believes in the potential of the ute market, in this context, Polemann quoted that it is a very important segment in Australia and it's a field where the company can play. She further added, the team is already a volume player in the (light commercial vehicle) segment and investigating a new ute to be launched in upcoming years.

In light of these citations, it can be expected that a version of the alliance ute platform can be adapted by Renault for the launch after three years from now. Moreover, the next-gen Nissan Navara will also have the same platform which is expected to launch in five years.

So how things move in the favour of upcoming Renault ute is next to be seen. Stay tuned to Zigwheels Australia for more on this.
