Mercedes-Benz recalls the 2018-19 CLS

Mercedes-Benz recalls the 2018-19 CLS

It is widely known that recalls do not spare even the best and the greatest of the automobile manufacturers. While the likes of the Honda, Ford, and others are already deep in recall troubles thanks to several issues like Takata airbags,  gearbox faults, and many others, it is now Mercedes-Benz that finds itself recalling more than 100 units of the 2018-19 model-year CLS four-door coupe. The reason behind the recall is the 48V onboard electrical system on the CLS that is carrying a high possibility of breaking down.

In case the 48V onboard electrical system fails, customers may find their coupe with an engine stall because of high coolant temperature and non-operating idle stop/start or "glide mode" functions. Furthermore, if the 48V onboard electrical system gives up while the CLS coupe is in motion, severe accidents may transpire and cause serious injuries to the occupants and also to those in other vehicles and on the roads.

"The electric line for the power supply of the coolant pump may make contact with the engine fan, causing damage. This may lead to a malfunction of the coolant pump or deactivation of the 48V onboard electrical system", reads the recall notice.

Moreover, as we mentioned earlier, below is a part of the recall notice that mentions the hazards that may occur due to the faulty electrical system:

"This may lead to a malfunction of the coolant pump or a deactivation of the 48V on-board electrical system, potentially causing:

- the engine to stall due to extremely high coolant temperature

- the engine to not restart after the shut-off by the ECO start/stop or "glide mode" functions.

In the above cases, the vehicle could stall, increasing the risk of an accident or injury to vehicle occupants and other road users".

The recall includes a total of 107 vehicles that need to be repaired. The German automobile manufacturer has requested the affected customers to contact their most convenient authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer or service center for a free-of-charge repair.
