Volkswagen Transporter is one of the most reputable vans in Australia. In 2019, VW has introduced the sixth-generation Transporter with new interior and exterior design. Volkswagen Transporter being a multipurpose van is available in two grades Van and Crewvan. With Van grade offering two-seat configuration and latter comes with an additional second row with three seats. Also, Crewvan gets two sliding doors on the right and left side. Unlike this, the core features in both grades are almost similar. The Transporter can be decked with either 2.0L TDI four-cylinder turbocharged engine or 2.0L TDI four-cylinder bi-turbocharged diesel engine. Both engines get the start/stop function for better fuel efficiency. Transporter also comes with optional all-wheel-drive backed by 4Motion technology. It’s the first van in the market to offer this powertrain. Apart from this, both grades of Transporter features nearly similar driving assistance, interior, exterior, and safety features. The standard features include Bluetooth, cruise control, heated exterior mirrors, power windows, and air conditioning.

The interiors of Transporter has been smartly designed to keep up with the day to day tasks. Notably, the cabin is spacious and offer plenty of space for cargo. Transporter’s Crewvan gets an additional section for second-row passengers. The seats are convenient for long trips, and also comes with the manual lumbar support and height adjustable feature. In terms of cargo space, both grades of Transporter offers 5,800L with standard roof and 6,700L with the medium roof. Volkswagen Transporter also comes furnished with plenty of convenience features. You’ll get standard cruise control, front air conditioning with manual climate control, six lashing rings. Besides in terms of infotainment, Transporter comes standard with the 5-inch colour touchscreen, CD player, four speakers, and AUX support. You can also opt for additional packages which include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen display.
Transporter Van Exterior
Based on T6 platform, Transporter has been updated with new exterior and interior elements. The front fascia looks different and more engaging than before. The base grade of the Transporter comes standard with the left sliding door and optional right sliding door. And, the Crewvan trim is available with sliding doors on each side. You can also get optional electric sliding doors for both grades. To further comfort the drivers while driving for a long time on summer roads, Volkswagen has installed heat-insulating windshield glass. It’s available on both the grades and hinders the outer heat to affect the cabin temperature. The standard exterior features of the Transporter van include halogen headlights with range adjustment, daytime running lights, rear fog lights, and high stoplight. Transporter Van grade rides on 16-inch steel wheels when paired with TDI340 engine and 17-inch steel wheels with TDI400 engine. Whereas Crewvan comes with standard 16-inch steel wheels, and the 17-inch alloy wheels are optional.
Volkswagen Transporter Van Ride & Handling
As a van, the ride quality of Transporter is excellent and agreeable for carrying cargo on rough road conditions. Volkswagen has worked well on enhancing the suspension to match the heavy-duty tasks. The front axle is paired with the independent McPherson struts and gas-filled dampers. While in the rear axle, the semi-independent suspension comes paired with coil springs and an anti-roll bar. This configuration empowers the Transporter to be one of the most reliable vans for transporting freight without any discomfort. Also, the rack and pinion based power steering ensure resolute handling on bumpy roads.
Transporter Van Engine & Fuel Consumption
Volkswagen has tailored the powertrain of the Transporter to match the growing demands of the customers. Now, it’s available in 2.0L TDI340 four-cylinder turbocharged engine and 2.0L TDI400 four-cylinder bi-turbocharged engine. Transporter Van grade is available with TDI340 engine paired with the 6-speed manual or TDI400 engine paired with the 7-speed DSG transmission. While the Transporter Crewvan variant is available with both TDI 340 and TDI400 engines mated with 7-speed DSG transmission. Also, when paired with TDI400, Crewvan comes with the all-wheel-drive powertrain. Both engines get BlueMotion technology, and it optimises the engine performance for better fuel efficiency. In terms of performance, the turbocharged engine can produce a maximum power of 103 kW at 3,500 rpm and torque of 340 Nm at 1,750–2,500 rpm. Whereas the bi-turbocharged engine can deliver a maximum power output of 132 kW at 4,000 rpm and torque of 400 Nm at 1,500–2,000 rpm. Volkswagen Transporter Van, when decked with the TDI340 engine and 6-speed manual can deliver a combined fuel economy of 7.2L/100km. While the Crewvan delivers 7.7L/100km fuel mileage with 7-speed DSG. On the other hand, TDI400, when paired with the Transporter Van, offers a fuel efficiency of 7.6L/100km and 8.3L/100km with the Crewvan.
Volkswagen Transporter Van Braking & Safety
Volkswagen Transporter is one of the safest vans in the world. However, it doesn’t come with a lot of driving assistance features. But, being a budget-friendly van, it is loaded with necessary safety features. On the braking front, Transporter comes standard with the power-assisted hydraulic brakes. In the front and rear wheels, Transporter Van grade is equipped with 308mm ventilated disc brakes and 294mm ventilated disc brakes. Whereas Transporter Crewvan is paired with 340mm ventilated disc brakes in the front wheels and 294mm ventilated disc brakes in the rear. Both grades come with the standard antilock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution system, electronic stabilisation program, and brake assist. The driving assistance features of Transporter include driver fatigue detection, a rearview camera, multi-collision brake, and electronic differential lock. The forward collision warning with emergency braking is standard with the Transporter Van, while the adaptive cruise control is optional with a driving assistance package.
