Volkswagen T-Cross 85TSI, 110TSI Australia launch by mid-2020

Volkswagen T-Cross 85TSI, 110TSI Australia launch by mid-2020

The German conglomerate Volkswagen has confirmed its plans to launch Polo-based T-Cross and Golf-based T-Roc crossovers in Australia in May 2020.  Speaking at the side-lines of expanded Touareg range launch, VW Australia product marketing manager Jeff Shafer said, 2020 will be VW’s “year of the SUV” as it will bring Cross and T-Roc to the land down under.

These new models will join VW Australia’s range of compact family SUVs, which currently offers Touareg and Tiguan. The details for the T-Roc are sketchy; however, the 85TSI T-Cross is expected to roll out first in May next year. Moreover, it will share the 85kW three-cylinder engine with the existing Polo.

As for the 110TSI variant, it will be rolled out at a later stage and will sit above the 85TSI grade in the T-Roc range. Under the skin, there will be a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine emanating 110 kW and 250 Nm torque. It will be linked to a seven-speed DSG gearbox for transmitting power to the wheels.

This engine made its Australian debut with the 2019 Skoda Karoq; however, T-Cross will be the first model in VW's range to feature it. While Volkswagen is still tight-lipped about the T-Cross price, it is estimated to start below $30,000. On the other hand, the T-Cross price for the higher 110TSI variant is likely to be positioned above $30,000.

As for the T-Roc crossover, it could get a 140 kW engine with an all-wheel drivetrain. Both T-Roc and T-Cross are crucial for Volkswagen as they will be entering the highly popular small city-sized SUV space. While Volkswagen will soon add these two models to its crossover line-up, it has already launched the base Touareg 190 TDI variant in the country with prices starting from $79,490 before on roads. The new variant is powered by the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine good for 190 kW of maximum power and 600 Nm torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is paired to the turbo-diesel engine, and an all-wheel-drive system is standard.
