Tesla’s fourth Gigafactory to be built in Berlin
After marking the presence in China and the US, the American all-electric carmaker Tesla announced its plan to build a new manufacturing plant in Europe. At a recent award ceremony in Germany, the brand CEO Elon Musk quoted that 'Gigafactory 4' will be located in Berlin. Musk later tweeted "Giga Berlin," and mentioned that the location "Will build batteries, powertrains & vehicles, starting with Model Y." Not only this, an engineering and design center will also be located in the German city.
The first lot of Model 3 has just rolled out from Gigafactory 3 in China and now the upcoming unit will be the fourth Gigafactory. This is not the first time when Musk talked about the fourth factory in Europe, this has been teasing it from the last few years. He perceives that Germany holds a good proportion of the auto industry and this made him choose that region. He also mentioned that the firm is intended to build around 10-12 Gigafactories all over the globe.
About the operational existence of the factory in Europe, the brand hopes to get it started by 2021. Since the factory will be producing Model Y crossovers and Model 3 sedans, it is likely to have similarities with the Shanghai facility. The firm is targeting to achieve the goal of producing 3000 units of Model 3 cars in China per week which means the targets for new plant would be higher or similar.
Though it will the fourth Gigafactory, it is not the brand’ fourth one. Apart from this, the firm assembles cars at a former Toyota plant in Fremont, California, a seat factory near the Fremont plant and also in the process of creating a plant in Lathrop, California.
