Porsche recalls Panamera, 911, Boxster and Cayman 2015-16 model year

Porsche recently issued a recall notice for the 2015-16 Panamera, 911, Boxster and Cayman (981 and 982 generation) due to concerns regarding airbag control units. 

The company officials explained the defect as the airbag control unit with an out of specification capacitor responsible for maintaining power supply might have been installed. The out of specification capacitor can deploy the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in the car unexpectedly, or stop them deploying in an accident.

A VIN list of a total 346 vehicles for the model year 2015-16 is provided by the automaker which may get affected by the aforementioned defect.

As per NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) documentation, the vehicle owners of the affected cars will be notified by the Porsche requesting them to contact a nearby authorized dealer to arrange free inspection and repair of the vehicle. 

For immediate assistance, customers can contact Porsche customer service personnel by calling (800) 767-7243. Callers should use the recall identification code AKB4. Also, they can contact NHTSA directly using the Vehicle Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236.

Before this, Porsche has recalled more than 7,500 vehicles which may be equipped with defective airbag control modules, as per the documentation filed with the NHTSA. Though, out of that, the automaker suspects to have just 1% defective vehicles. The recall includes multiple Porsche models:

• 2016-2017 Porsche 911 coupes manufactured between June 30, 2015, and April 16, 2016.
• 2016-2017 Porsche Boxster coupes manufactured between July 1, 2015, and March 15, 2016.
• 2016 Porsche Cayman coupes manufactured between July 8, 2015, and April 18, 2016.
• 2016 Porsche Panamera hatchbacks manufactured between June 23, 2015, and April 7, 2016.

For the same concern, Hyundai issued a voluntary safety recall notice in February 2018 for selected vehicles outfitted with airbag control modules manufactured from the same supplier. Also, the automaker Kia recalled vehicles in June 2018.
