2020 Genesis GV80 - What to expect?

The luxury automaker from Korea, Genesis is gearing up to release its first-ever luxury crossover SUV in the market, the GV80. The car was first revealed as the GV80 concept at the New York Auto Show in 2017. Later on, the automaker released official photographs ahead of its full reveal at a private media event in Seoul, South Korea.

The GV80 is said to take on the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-class in terms of spec and design when it goes on sale, later in 2020. Genesis's first SUV is said to be offered in a total of two power output options that will be based on the V6 engine. Interestingly, the vehicle is said to get a rear-wheel-drive option along with a standard all-wheel-drive that will be offered as optional. The SUV is expected to provide both agile handling and a smooth, quiet ride. The GV80 made its most recent appearance at a splash in a Super Bowl LIV ad.

From its exterior, the GV80 looks almost like the concept model car which was showcased at the New York Auto Show in 2017. The seven-seater SUV, with its interesting exterior design, introduces a new styling technique to a hugely competitive segment. The styling feature of the vehicle can represent the traditional shape of an SUV alongside retaining the concept's upswept window line and large D-pillar configuration.

The front end of the car will be representing the company's signature Genesis grille with the addition of sports marker lights on its fenders. The other exterior of the vehicle is said to include a dual panoramic sunroof, 22-inch alloys, two-tier headlights, and taillights. Interestingly, even the side turn signals of the vehicle are said to follow the double-bar lighting motif.

2020 Genesis GV80 engine specifications

Although no official specifications have been revealed on the powertrain of the car, the GV80 lineup is said to bear its power from a 3.8-litre V6 engine along with a twin-turbo 3.3-litre V6 engine. The upcoming vehicle is also rumoured to be available in a 5.0-litre V8 option alongside a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder V6. an eight-speed automatic transmission is expected to handle the transmission duty of the GV80.

Interestingly, one can also expect the upcoming GV80 to run on a hybrid powertrain.

The interior for the upcoming GV80 is said to get a new, more upscale level of interior arrangement for Genesis's lineup. The interior of the vehicle is said to feature high proportions of burled-wood trim, metal accents, integrated ambient lighting, and a large slim-shaped infotainment display for the rider safety and assistance. Apart from the upscaled and fancy materials inside the car, the vehicle will get a smartly designed cabin space to provide a sense of minimalism inside. With a more cushiony and comfortable upholstery, the front seats are comfortable and available with a massage.

The infotainment system inside the car is embraced by a slim 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, stretching across the middle of the GV80's tailored dashboard. As per the assumptions around the car, the touch screen infotainment system is expected to provide the front-seat occupants with an opportunity to change the radio station or manipulate the navigation system. The other expected infotainment and connectivity features include a surround-view monitor on the user’s smartphone via Genesis’s Connected Services, a digital key to access the car, Genesis CarPay and Voice recognition for commanding window, trunk, climate, media control, and others.

2020 Genesis GV80 safety and driver-assistance features

Though the 2020 Genesis GV80 has not been rated yet by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), it is expected to come with an extensive line of active and passive safety and driver-assist features. The plethora of safety features includes Forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, high-definition 360-degree camera, and a following-distance indicator among others.

Interestingly, Genesis is said to include an even smarter adaptive cruise control system, automatic emergency braking, and a driver drowsiness detection system. 

Lastly, the Australian release of the all-new seven-seat luxury SUV is set to take place very soon, as previously promised by global boss Manfred Fitzgerald. At the time of its arrival, the vehicle is said to join the mid-size Genesis G70 sedan, carrying a price tag of $59,300 and the large Genesis G80 sedan, which starts from $68,900.
